WHO WE ARE
TESOL-SPAIN was founded in 1977 as a small, independent,
non-profit making Spanish association of English language teachers. Today it is
a nation-wide organisation with a membership that represents all sectors and
regions of English language teaching in the country. It is a voluntary
organisation which is dedicated to addressing pertinent issues for teachers of
English in Spain. The organisation provides a forum for colleagues to meet and
share ideas and techniques as well as research and discuss professional issues.
TESOL-SPAIN, mediating between national and international development, keeps
its members abreast of current concerns with the aim of improving the quality
and effectiveness of language teaching at the regional and national level in
Spain. Membership is available on an individual, institutional or student
basis. Membership forms can be found MORE
WHO WE WORK WITH
TESOL-SPAIN is also affiliated with several international
teacher associations. Through these affiliations, we maintain regular contacts
with many other international associations throughout the world. In addition to
being an affiliate of TESOL International, TESOL-SPAIN is also an
associate of IATEFL (The International Association of
Teachers of English as a Foreign Language). TESOL-SPAIN also works closely with
regional language teaching associations in Spain. Through its regional
structure, TESOL-SPAIN organises lectures, conferences, workshops and social
events in different parts of the country throughout the academic year. Events
are sometimes carried out jointly with other national and international
associations or in co-operation with regional teacher associations in Spain
such as GRETA (Granada);
CETA
(Cordoba); TEA (Canary Islands);
APINEX
(Extramadura); TESOL-GREECEand
IATEFL-POLAND.
OUR NATIONAL CONVENTION
Since its foundation, TESOL-SPAIN has held a
NATIONAL
CONVENTION every year. The convention is attended by teachers
from a wide variety of ELT areas. There are teachers from the pre-school,
primary, and secondary education sectors and there are also Escuela Oficial
de Idiomas [Official School of Languages], university, technical school,
academy, and freelance teachers as well as teacher trainers, materials writers
and course planners. Publishers, ELT researchers, members of testing boards and
institutions and national and international authors also take part in the
convention. Thus, participants have the opportunity to look over an extensive
range of materials available for teacher development and classroom
use.
The convention offers participants a wide variety of
presentations by national and international speakers including plenary
presentations, papers, workshops, demonstrations, discussions, roundtables and
product presentations. There are usually over 100 presentations over two and a
half days on a wide range of topics. In addition, there are publishers'
exhibitions from the main publishing houses as well as smaller, more
specialized houses, poster displays and idea exchanges, a jobs board and social
events to end each day. As a result, members are provided with the opportunity
to hear about the latest theory and developments in ELT, both nationally and
internationally, and to exchange knowledge and experience. They are also able
to make contacts with other colleagues who share the same interests and to
return home with some practical ideas and teaching materials for their
classrooms.
PUBLICATIONS
The TESOL-SPAIN Newsletter, published three times a year, and
provided to its members free of charge, keeps its readership informed about the
latest trends and news in the field. The Newsletter contains articles on
aspects of ELT practice as well as theory, information on regional, national,
European and international events and associated teaching organisations, news
from regions, book reviews, useful website addresses, and information on
international TESOL trends, research and publications. It is another
opportunity for members to engage in dialogue and discussion and share ideas
and concerns with fellow TESOL-SPAIN members. NEWSLETTER

WEBSITE
The TESOL-SPAIN website has become a valuable vehicle for
communicating with both members and non-members. It offers information on
upcoming events, both national and international, a directory of TESOL-SPAIN
board members and regional co-ordinators, a jobs board, a Newsletter page, and
a photo gallery. There is also an on-line resource section that is constantly
being updated. This offers teachers links to organisations, schools, journals,
publishers and CALL as well as links to pages on lesson plans and activities
for classroom use divided by topic. In addition, there is a chat room and a
discussion forum. RESOURCES
