24th TESOL SPAIN Convention Update

The University of Seville, March 30th, 31st & April 1st

2001: A Quest for Teacher Development

We are honoured and proud to have Penny Ur, a distinguished veteran and truly dedicated professional ELT practitioner and teacher trainer, as one of this year’s plenary speakers. Penny will open the convention with ‘What Does it Mean to be a Professional Teacher ?’ Her input over the weekend will include running a double session for teacher trainers which addresses issues related to increasing the effectiveness of teacher training sessions. Further focus on teacher training and development includes ‘Narratives: Wellspring for Development’, by Anne McCabe, and classroom research and observation as reflection are topics also highlighted through a number of presentations.

Our second plenary speaker is Adrian Underhill, who likewise brings countless years of ELT professionalism and involvement to the convention. Along with Jane Arnold, another well-known author and our host at the University of Seville, he will present on ‘Humanising the Classroom’.

Issues relating to teaching English in Spain will be brought to the fore as most of this year’s presenters draw on their experiences from our local context. In particular, native-speaker dominance of pronunciation teaching will be challenged as it is shown how Spanish teachers are better poised to deal with learners’ problems. There will also be a presentation on the Basque Government project for English at infant level and talks on bilingual education, teaching in ESO, bachillerato and universities.

Dynamic and as practical as ever, Paul Seligson will be giving two presentations; ‘Ear This’ and ‘Oral Correction without a Dentist’. There will be a host of practical and theoretical presentations, demonstrations and workshops for all sectors of the language teaching profession for students at all levels (infants, primary, secondary, university and adult learners) with a focus on language, pronunciation, culture, classroom techniques, skills work, tasks, dictionaries, class libraries, drama, literature, stories, screenplays, projects, music, games, video, evaluation and exam classes, and much more. Additionally, there will be presentations which address different learner styles and types, visualisation and NLP, motivation, personalisation and memory strategies.

Naturally, there will be a high profile for the role of new technologies in ELT with sessions on the use of the internet and on-line classrooms, multi-media resources and activities, computers in Educación Secundaria, new technologies in academy teaching, data-driven learning and teaching, and much more. The current swing towards the increasing use of modern technology will be provocatively framed in language learning theory in the presentation ‘Computerised Language Learning: Retry, Ignore or Abort?’. Similarly, along the lines of reflecting on what we do, Scott Thornbury will provide a rationale for ‘Teaching Unplugged’.

Returning the teacher as centre stage, there will be a research presentation on ‘Teacher Stress: Causes, Effects and Management’ and on a more practical level, a workshop entitled ‘Técnicas para alivar el estrés del Profesor de Idiomas’. All the above is in addition to up-to-date displays of the latest teaching materials available for the classroom and teacher development, and social events throughout what promises to be an enriching weekend for us all.

An Overview of the Convention

The theme of the 24th Annual Convention is 2001: A Quest for Teacher Development. This year we are honored to have Penny Ur as our opening plenary speaker and Adrian Underhill as our closing plenary speaker. We are also fortunate to have Adrian, Jane Arnold, Herbert Puchta, and Scott Thornbury as our keynote speakers, on Saturday. We have over 130 presentations from speakers based in the Israel, Scotland, Turkey, Hungary, Lebanon, England, Greece, Portugal, Japan, Cyprus, Poland, as well as many locals from our own country. The presentations cover topics specifically relating to our theme, such as Effective Teacher-Training Sessions and Classroom Research for Teacher Development as well as many general topics. We are working on opening the Faculty’s computer room for a few hours for participants to wander in and out experimenting with using the Internet as another teaching tool.

There will be a wealth of presentations with a practical slant: talks, demonstrations, and workshops on techniques and methodology for infants, primary, secondary, university and adult learners in general. In answer to previous years' feedback, calling for more practical ideas and activities to be taken into the classroom, this year there is a wide variety of hands-on workshops on teaching pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as on using pop songs, drama, video, dictionaries, advertising, games and stories.

Additionally, there are presentations that consider skills development (reading, listening, speaking and writing) with both a practical and theoretical focus. We also have presentations on peer assessment, visualization, NLP, dyslexia, stress management for teachers, mind maps, memory strategies, correction and more.

There will be a number of talks on a range of ESP courses, for example, Business English, English for Academic Purposes and English for Social Work.

Exhibits:

More than 45 exhibits will offer an excellent opportunity to examine a variety of the latest materials for both the teacher and the classroom. Many publishing and educational organizations continue their support of TESOL-Spain members by displaying their products and services as well as by sponsoring presentations and other aspects of the convention program. This exhibit will be open at 15:00 Friday.

Getting More Involved with TESOL-Spain:

There are a number a ways you may become a more active member of this VOLUNTEER organization. The first and probably easiest avenue to take would simply be to cast your vote for board members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 13.30 – 14.30 on Saturday before lunch. The AGM is a forum for TESOL-Spain members to make contact with their Board members. It is your opportunity to find out what the association does behind the scenes as well as what direction it may be going in the future. It is a time for any and all members to voice their opinion towards the betterment of the association and, perhaps a time for members to get involved to make this volunteer association function in the most effective manner. Other possibilities would be to attend your area’s Regional Meeting (RM) to get more involved on a regional level or to participate in the Special Interest Group (SIG) sessions to meet others with similar interests. Look for your RM or SIG meeting woven into the timetable.

Social and Professional Contacts:

There will be many chances to meet colleagues and look for professional contacts. We are planning a Friday evening welcoming cocktail for all participants. In addition, a special effort will be made to offer a more informal get-together on Saturday night. Reservations for this event can be made directly through the registration form (inside back cover of this preprogram). There will also be coffee and refreshments available on site.

Job Board: We will be setting up a centrally located table and board for job seeking/offering possibilities. Just fill out the appropriate form (inserted in this preprogram), bring it along with you to the convention, and drop it off at the Job Board table in the reception area where we will arrange for it to be displayed.

Swap Shop: This is a fun idea to exchange teaching ideas with colleagues. Share your favorite activity and collect up to 40 ideas in return by following these guidelines:

1. Write up your lesson plan or teaching idea in a clear, user-friendly format. The heading should include your name, school, lesson title, the instructional level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) and age group (Primary, Secondary, Adults, General, etc.) for which the materials are most appropriate. All submissions must be typed and the maximum length is one page, back and front.

2. Prepare 40 copies of your materials. There will be photocopying facilities on-site although each participant is responsible for his/her own copying costs.

3. Take your copies to the Swap Shop table no later than lunchtime on Saturday. You will receive an entrance ticket to the Swap Shop (only the first 40 activities will be accepted).

4. After lunch on Saturday, you may stop by the table again and exchange your ticket for all the activities that have been submitted.

Attendance Certificates:

Certificates of attendance will be available to registrants after lunch on Sunday evening in the reception area.

Raffle:

A raffle will be held during the closing of the convention and you can participate by filling out the convention evaluation form available in your convention packet.

Where to Stay in Seville!

****HOTEL

The Hotel Pasarela is the convention hotel and is a 6-minute walk from the University. To take advantage of special reduced rates for TESOL-Spain participants, you should make your reservations through our TESOL-Spain travel agent, Jenny Brown, who speaks Spanish and English. (See below for contact details). Due to extraordinarily high hotel rates in Seville at this time, we are only working with this hotel, as it is by far the most economical, yet it has very nice accommodations. Allocation is limited and Jenny will be strictly working on a first come, first serve basis and she requires a deposit of 50% to secure the reservation with the balance to be paid three weeks in advance. Jenny can also be contacted for information on travel arrangements, tours and sightseeing. Ask her about possible discounts for RENFE, the train lines.

STUDENT HOUSING

We are also offering student housing at very economical rates and for more information, contact Concha Julian de Vega by e-mail only!!! Information will not be given by phone or post. You may contact Concha at: tsantana@arrakis.es or tammiyale@ hotmail.com .Please DO NOT contact Jenny Brown for student housing.

Facultad de Filología
c/ San Fernando,4
41071 SEVILLA

Traveling around Seville by public transport is relatively easy. The bus system is regular and there are two major stops on either side of the university. A one-way bus ticket is 125 pesetas and can be purchased directly from the driver. There are also 10-ride tickets that can be purchased at almost any newsstand. Taxis are relatively inexpensive and available. This is a good option for those touring at the late hours. To arrive to the convention site or the convention hotel (only a 6-minute walk between the two) for the first time, refer to the following information for details:

Airport

A taxi from the airport will cost about 1.800-2.500 pts* and this should include baggage charges. There is an airport bus, which leaves the airport every half hour. It has three stops and finalizes at the Hotel Alfonso XIII, which is right next to the University. A one-way ticket is 350 pts.

Train Station

A taxi from Santa Justa Train Station will cost about 500-800 pts*. There is bus #C2, which can be picked up very near the taxi stop as you walk out of the station and it stops a few blocks from the Hotel Pasarela. Ask for the Avenida de la Borbolla bus stop, near the Plaza de España.
