Jeremy Harmer is a
methodology writer, coursebook, writer, trainer and teacher. After initial
training at International House London he worked first for IH and then for the
Anglo Mexican Cultural Institute in Mexico. A spell at Eurocentre, Bournemouth
followed where he co-wrote Advanced Writing/Advanced Speaking Skills. Following
an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading (UK), JH went back
to Mexico, becoming the director of the Guadalajara branch of the Instituto
Anglo Mexicano de Cultura. It was during this time that the first edition of
The Practice of English Language Teaching (now in its 3rd edition) was written.
On returning to the UK JH devoted himself to full-time writing,
developing (and co-developing) Meridian Plus, Coast to Coast, The Listening
File and Touchdown - amongst others - for Longman. At the same time he ran
occasional teacher training courses for the Bell School in Cambridge and taught
in other Cambridge schools. Around this time he started being invited to
training courses and conferences in different countries (including, many times,
Spain) and he now travels widely, giving talks and workshops all over the
world.
JH is the editor of the How to methodology series published by
Longman. In that series he has written How to Teach English and the recently
published How to Teach Writing. He is also the author (and co-author) of the
Just skills series and the brand new course Just Right published by Marshall
Cavendish, a bright new entity in the ELT world. He is an occasional lecturer
at Anglia Polytechnic university, where he also teaches EFL when he can, and he
is a DELTA assessor. He hosts a TD website at www.eltforum.com When not
involved in ELT JH is obsessed by music. A guitarist (and not very good
pianist), he also plays viola in the Cambridge Philharmonic orchestra.
