BY PLANE
Arriving in Madrid by Plane

If you fly with Iberia, British Airways, American Airlines or others of the 'One World' group, you will arrive at the new Terminal 4. Unlike Terminals 1-3, this is not connected to the metro system and you should therefore allow plenty of extra time for your journey between the airport and Madrid.

There is an airport shuttle service (free) connecting T 4 with Terminal 2: this takes about 15 minutes. Alternatively, you may find it easier to pay for an extra 1 ticket and take the municipal (EMT) bus number 204 straight to the city. The bus leaves from outside the terminal (follow signs and cross the bridge to reach the bus lane) and goes to Avenida de América, where four metro lines, including line 6, meet. However, if you are heading directly to your hotel (e.g. Hotel Ópera, or the Tryp on Gran Via) you should get off at Metro Canillejas, on the edge of the city, and take line 5 straight there. Combining bus and metro requires two separate tickets, but the journey will be easier than going via the old terminals.

The airport bus to Plaza Colón no longer exists.

Current experience suggests that it may be better not to check any luggage in (i.e. take hand luggage only) when travelling to and from Terminal 4. You should also allow extra time for checking in, as the terminal is very large and reaching your boarding gate (including taking a train) takes 40-50 minutes. Check-in closes earlier than is normal at the other terminals. You will then have plenty of time to admire the architecture and browse through around the shops!
