POWER, INFLUENCE AND AUTHORITY: THEIR MEANING FOR THE TEACHER

MILLS, Patrick
ESADE, Barcelona

Wkshp / Eng / AGen / LGen / TGen / TDv P . . * . T
What do these words mean? Why don't we talk about them? Teachers are granted power and are expected to use it and use it constructively. Yet nobody attempts to explain what power is or how to use it. This workshop will help to rectify the situation by discussing different types of power, methods of influence and reactions to them.

GETTING INVOLVED IN TESOL-SPAIN

TESOL-Spain is an organisation that has now been alive (and kicking!) for 21 years, thanks to many people who, over the years, have committed their time, energy and talents to its functioning. TESOL-Spain needs this vital contribution of its members. If you're interested in getting involved at any level, national, regional, SIGS, Web...... come along to this meeting and find out more about how TESOL-Spain works and about how you can get involved. Some questions that we hope to answer are: What does it mean to become a Board member? Who can become a Board member? How do you get nominated for the Board? What can members do at regional level? , along with any questions you'd like to ask. See you there!

NEW WORDS FOR NEW LABOUR'S NEW BRITAIN
FOX, Gwyneth
Heinemann
Ppr / Eng / AGen / LGen / TGen / Voc
Language is never static. Words come in and out of use. New words are needed to express new concepts; when the concept is no longer relevant, neither is the word. In New Labour's new Britain, words are being coined in a number of areas. In computing, obviously, we know about the internet, but what about the intranet'? 'Java' is no longer just an island, and an 'applet' isn't a small apple pie. Cookery and DIY haven't escaped either: after 'dragging' or 'ragrolling' your walls, you'll be ready to eat a 'ready chill' chicken korma which is 'microwaveable' or 'ovenable', and drink an 'alcopop' or two. Could language be going 'pear-shaped'?

Problems arise in the multicultural / national EFL oral skills classroom when one nationality monopolises any oral interaction, but it is especially noticeable between Japanese and non-Japanese students. USING TASKS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: THEORY AND PRACTICE

SKEHAN, Peter
Thames Valley University, London, U.K.

Ppr / Eng / AGen / LGen / TGen / SLA P . * * . T
The last decade has seen an explosion of interest in the use of tasks, both theoretically and practically. Both researchers and teachers have wanted to discover how communicative activities can be used in a principled way, consistent with contemporary Second Language Acquisition theory, and effective in the classroom. The talk will be in three parts. First, some recent approaches to tasks and task-based instruction will be reviewed. Then, the results of a series of research projects at Thames Valley University will be described which demonstrate empirically the importance of factors such as task choice, and pre- and post-task activities. Finally, practical implications of this work are suggested, including a review of current models of how pedagogic applications can be made.

Ppr / Eng / T2,3 / TDv, Eval P . * . . T
Testing is an important part of a teacher's activity, but the subject can be daunting. Teacher training courses usually have little time to devote to it. HOW COMMUNICATIVE IS THAT TASK?

GROESCHEL, Guido
Centro Inglés (Segovia)

Co-operative learning exploits student teams whose members have shared responsibility for successful processing of learning content and completion of tasks - most relevant for developing speaking skills. Amongst other benefits, it helps weaker students develop the confidence and motivation for participating more. We will work on activities which have been developed for this purpose, and comment on their applicability.

KALISKI, Karl
Cambridge Language School, Granollers, Barcelona

Wkshp / AGen / LGen / TGen / Gram / CTec P * . . . T
Usually, when presenting grammar, we try to find a context and present the language 'communicatively'. However, with some language points - articles, gerunds and infinitives, and prepositions for example - it can be difficult to do this. In this workshop we'll be looking at a series of practical ideas for presenting these kinds of language areas, using songs, video and visuals.

KALISKI, Karl
Cambridge Language School, Granollers, Barcelona

Wkshp / Eng / A2,3 / LGen / TGen / CTec P * . . . T
Task-Based Learning (TBL) is becoming increasingly popular. However, teachers who would like to put it into practice often face the problem of having to use materials not designed with a task-based approach in mind. This workshop looks at ways of adapting textbook materials and making them more consistent with the approach. (Those attending this workshop should have some familiarity with TBL).

En esta ponencia se describirán unas nuevas técnicas para la evaluación de personal.

Ppr / Eng / A2,3 / L2,3 / T2,3 / CR, TDv P . . * . T
Many writers feel that 'general conversation' is unteachable and that this is one of the failures of the Communicative Approach. Using Conversational Analysis of classroom talk of Spanish students I will show that it is possible to identify features present in Spanish conversation (eg. high involvement) which, when transferred to conversation in English may cause pragmatic problems with native English teachers.

THE POWER OF PRE-WRITING TASKS

GROESCHEL, Guido
Centro Inglés (Segovia)

Wkshp / Eng / A2,3 / L2,3,Mix / TGen / W, CTec P . * . . T
Sometimes it appears that students do not have much to write or say, and this can have a negative impact on the activities we plan. Pre-writing techniques can help students 'discover' ideas to write and talk about. In this workshop we will focus on how we use a few pre-writing techniques with some new twists.
