Texts on the internet are not
the same as a text in a book: they are often shorter, have images and videos to
help explain them sometimes and they also have HYPERTEXT or links which link
texts together. This can be interesting and helpful, but sometimes confusing
and you can get lost easily. Here are some ideas for reading texts and
analysing their language on the internet.
Make predictions
of what you think you will read first. The accompanying caption and maybe
images will help you.
Read quickly to get an idea of the general meaning
first. If it is a very long text maybe you want to concentrate on two or three
paragraphs only.
Does the text have hyperlinks? Do they help you
understand or analyse the text or just confuse you?
Look carefully at
the language: vocabulary, expressions, tenses, style and tone etc. how do these
reflect the purpose of the text?
Think about the
difficult vocabulary. Are there words you think you understand in the context.
Are there words which are essential to find th emeaning (remember you can use
an online dictionary).
Make a note of the
main ideas and facts. Make a note also of some expressions and
vocabulary.
You could practice writing
something similar ... the same type of text, news story, narrative etc. and
comparing it to the text on the internet before showing it to your teacher and
classmates.
