Call for Chapters

Proposals Submission Deadline: November 20, 2025
Full Chapters Due: March 5, 2026
Submission Date: March 5, 2026

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping language education, but its adoption raises urgent questions of equity, equality, and justice. While AI-assisted tools promise personalization, efficiency, and innovation, they also risk reinforcing inequalities, privileging dominant languages and cultures, and marginalizing underrepresented learners. This edited volume critically examines the intersection of AI and social justice in foreign language education, exploring how equity-oriented perspectives can inform the design, use, and evaluation of AI-enhanced pedagogies.

Objective

The book brings together researchers, teacher educators, practitioners, and policymakers to address key questions: Who benefits from AI in language education—and who is left behind? How do issues of bias, accessibility, and representation impact learners’ opportunities? What ethical frameworks can guide equitable implementation of AI in diverse educational contexts? Contributors will explore both challenges (e.g., algorithmic bias, digital divides, linguistic justice) and opportunities (e.g., inclusive design, equitable teacher training, AI-supported accessibility tools).

Target Audience

The book is designed for an international readership of language educators, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, coursebook authors and researchers in applied linguistics and educational technology. It will also appeal to policymakers, school administrators, NGOs, advocacy groups, and professionals engaged in equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. As a reference work, it can serve both as a resource for practitioners implementing AI tools and as a supplementary text in undergraduate and graduate programs on language education, educational technologies, and digital literacies.

Recommended Topics

The following topics illustrate the scope of the volume: - Equity at the center: Rethinking AI in language education through the lens of justice - Algorithmic bias and linguistic discrimination in AI-assisted learning tools - Accessibility, inclusion, and AI: Designing language learning tools for all learners - The digital divide revisited: Socioeconomic and geographic barriers to AI adoption in language education - AI and linguistic justice: Supporting endangered, minority, and migrant languages - Teacher agency and equity: Preparing educators to critically evaluate and implement AI - Policy frameworks for equitable and ethical use of AI in schools and higher education - AI as an ally: Opportunities for inclusive and differentiated instruction - Multilingual and multicultural perspectives on AI in language learning - Learner voice, identity, and fairness in AI-mediated learning environments
